I’m not a big shopping fan but when I’m in a different city and I have a local and enthusiastic ‘connoisseur’ by my side, it’s a different story. Lifestyle blogger Jocelina showed me a few of the coolest, classy stores in Rotterdam. Here are the places we visited!
Amsterdam is the most visited city of the Netherlands. But when it comes to fashion and design, Rotterdam has an equally wide variety of shops and shopping districts. And Jocelina knows all about them! She’s born and raised in Rotterdam and a true lifestyle addict (she has her own blog: Pink Chocolate Break). On request, she’ll take you on a shopping spree through the city.
1. Showroom41 – Recycled leather
Very few tourists make it all the way to the ‘Zwaanshals’ area, even though it’s a real up and coming shopping district north from the city centre. A well kept secret amongst Rotterdammers! You can find several design, art and fashion shops here like Showroom41, a make-up studio, hair salon and vintage store all in one. It’s owned by Ed Tijsen, who’s a renowned Dutch make-up artist and stylist. His partner Lione has a vintage clothing label: L.I.O.N.E. She makes one-off fashion garments, mainly in recycled leather, and sells them at Showroom41 along with vintage accessories by other brands. They just started an international webshop!

2. AAAFRESH123 – Action painting
AAAFresh123 is a modern art galery slash concept store. The men of the house are Maikel en Hans Kleinjan en Roderik Faasen, three designers who sell their own works along with a few guest designers. The trio does live action painting on events and in clubs. ‘AAA’ refers to Triple A, the highest rating awarded by credit rating agencies.

3. Op de Sofa – Hip & Dutch design
Op de sofa (‘on the sofa’) is a design store that allows young Dutch designers to show and sell their work to a large audience. It’s owned by Carlien Kottmann, who’s an interior stylist and advisor.

4. Ginza – Exclusive sneakers
If you’re a fan of Nike, Ginza is the place to be in Rotterdam. It’s one of the most exclusive sneaker stores in The Netherlands. Owner Margeret West, a well-known stylist from Rotterdam, travels the world, looking for the latest or final Nike Air Jordan pieces out there. She then takes them to Rotterdam and sells them at her Ginza shop.

5. Objet Trouvé – Extraordinary fashion
Object Trouvé (opened in January) is a big hit amongst Rotterdammers. The minimalistic shop is owned by two sisters and offers a mixture of French fashion (like ‘Les Prairies de Paris’), up and coming Scandinavian brands like Hope and local Dutch designers like Martine Viergever.

6. Roush – New York style
The ‘Van Oldenbarneveltstraat’ is nicknamed ‘The street that makes you smile’ because of the lovely beauty, fashion and design shops that you can find here. Like ‘Roush’! The fashion store has a great New York style ‘underground’ decor and sells clothes from Dutch and international designers.

7. Skins Cosmetics – Niche perfumes
Beautyfans go to Skin Cosmetics. Browse through the particular range of beauty products, professional make-up and – my favorite – the high-end ‘niche’ perfumes like Creed. It’s one of the world’s oldest privately owned fragrance houses.
