The castle has three sections: a lower, middle and upper ward. The lower section was used for soldiers and horses. In the middle you’ll see what’s left of the royal palace with a kitchen, church and courtyard. The Prince John Tower is at the top

The castle first belonged to a hermit, then it became a monastery (10th century), then a fort (11th century). It was the ideal location to spot pirates raiding the coast.
