On the isle of Curaçao, herb lady Dinah Veeris keeps old traditions of previous Curaçao generations alive. Like singing to plants!
In earlier times, when a plant was dying, they were gently rocked in a hammock and sung to, she explains. In the song, people would ask Owazeo, the god of nature, to take care of the plant.
“I great you earth, I great you plant, my friend. I ask you, Owazeo.”
You can see Dinah sing for yourself at her botanical garden in Banda Ariba. In her crowded little garden she grows more than 300 species of medicinal herbs and plants from Curaçao.
